the Entourage star and eco-advocate invites NOWNESS into his green garden

Adrian Grenier is best known for playing irresponsible Hollywood star Vincent Chase on Entourage, but his home and garden prove the guy has serious green credentials. A longtime believer in sustainable living, the 34-year-old Grenier has been quietly renovating the Victorian house in Brooklyn's Clinton Hill neighborhood he bought in 2005 to suit his sensibilities. Along with insulating the walls with recycled denim and installing solar panels, he enlisted Brook Landscape to design an "eclectic and resourceful" outdoor space, which included hand-carving an urban-milled log into a bespoke bench and planting a roof garden on top of the recently converted carriage house adjacent. With the eighth and final season of his hit HBO show currently airing on Sunday nights in the US, Grenier is spending more time on his off-screen activities––producing documentaries, playing music, and concentrating on SHFT, his Webby-award-winning site promoting eco-friendly living. Amidst the wisteria and paperbark maples shading his reclaimed bluestone patio, Grenier gave NOWNESS a piece of his green mind.

Tell us about your roof garden. I have a little garage that I converted into a carriage house, a guest retreat. It has a green roof that is basically succulent, with self-sufficient plants and gravel. They need very little maintenance, but they provide great insulation and prevent water run-off, which is responsible for carrying contaminants within cities to the oceans. A green roof helps to insulate the property better so you don't need as much air conditioning in summer or heat in the winter.

Do you still have a place in Los Angeles?I do, although I might be letting it go simply because Entourage is over. I'm doing SHFT.com, a lifestyle website bringing you the coolest things in sustainability. It’s trying to nudge my sustainable ideas and lifestyle choices into pop culture by using art and design as the vehicle. It’s about building partnerships with bigger brands, while at the same time putting forth our message of sustainability through living well. Living long by living well.

“Living long by living well.” Is that your mantra? Yeah. We're essentially trying to show that in order for life to be worth preserving, it has to be a quality life. We need to re-connect with who we are as human beings, how we live on the planet and find greater respect for ourselves and the wider world by starting to appreciate every moment.

Why do you see New York as a good place for a sustainable lifestyle?One reason I love New York is that it's so primed for green growth. I've been lucky enough to have a lot of green around me growing up. I always envision the city having more around: utilizing rooftops, ripping up sidewalks and planting trees.

j.mendel: one of my highest revered designers. his spring 2012 collection was inspired by Dorothy Draper, a pioneer in American interior design (early 1900s). vertical stripes in bold color combinations, cool geometry, belted waists, clean silhouettes, slits all the way up to there (!) and sharp pleating were consistent themes throughout.

Stripes are still a hit! There was a bold playfulness to the bright, diamond-print separates here, as well as the Saint James-esque striped pants. One of the coolest looks in the lineup was the graphic, color-blocked tunic worn over a pencil skirt. Lam calls it "the new suit." It should transition easily from day to night—ideal for his customer, who presumably has a calendar jam-packed with both work and social functions. [Style.com]

"Hanne Gaby Odiele [model featured in the the Spring 2012 RTW collection below] has this sunny, exuberant personality and a relaxed and cool sense of style," Derek Lam said. Joshua Dalsimer is not only the photographer for [RueLaLa]'s login campaign this year, but he’s been an integral part of [their] creative team and [their] conceptual process in conceiving the images themselves. And although at Rue [they] all think the work is pretty cool, [they] were also pretty pumped that Communication Arts agreed – they selected “Steamy Window” for the prestigous 2011 Communication Arts Photography Annual. [They] sat down with Josh to talk about where his inspiration comes from and how he’s brought the ideas to life.

When you first met with Rue’s creative team, there must have been chemistry because a significant (and amazing!) partnership has followed. How did it all evolve?
I am a photographer in New York, but also help advertising agencies concept and flesh out ideas. So when Rue La La came to me asking for help with their splash page, they saw that I could help with the concepting as well as shoot the images. Originally we were planning on doing a lifestyle shoot, but after seeing the roller coaster and lollipop splash pages, Amy (Rue Creative Director) and I thought it would be fun to continue to use the logo in real-life places. It seemed like a new approach to a familiar theme. After that initial meeting, Rue La La asked me to work with another art director/writer and come up with a list of places we could put the logo. I worked with my friend Justin Gignac, who is a fine artist and art director in New York. We turned in a list of around 50 ideas, and Rue selected a bunch and added their own into the mix. Because of my photography background, I have done a lot of work using the computer to create images as well as classic model building techniques – and I know what’s possible to pull off.

Let’s talk about the March shoot, “Steamy Window.” We’re sure you were thrilled to have it selected into the 52nd Communication Arts Photo Annual (the premier publication for the advertising industry). How did you take the initial concept and work it (so ingeniously) into your own vision?
My main goal was to make it look as real as possible. It sounds easy to shoot writing on a steamed-up window. But it was a hard thing to actually capture. We knew we wanted an upscale car but also wanted some mood and mystery. I tried to bring all those things into it.

Sophistication verses playfulness – tell us why this idea of balance is a common thread throughout all the login pages.
That is the theme that I find runs through Rue La La, and the creative team has a good feel for that theme and I follow that direction.

If you could describe this image in a single world, what would it be?
Steamy.

Who do you envision inside the car? Where are they going?
I leave that up to the viewer to decide.

Tell us about the key players of your crew who worked on this image.
Well, for this shot I had my producer Kyle Kramer and trusty assistant Winnie Au. The prop stylist was Gina Freedman – she was in the steamy car the whole shoot. I also worked with the London-based company Saddington Baynes to help with the retouching and the creation of the logo. They are an incredible team and I credit myself for being smart enough to hire them.

We all fantasize about the location. Tell us about the scene of the shoot.
We were in an empty lot in Williamsburg Brooklyn. We couldn’t shoot on a street because we needed to move the car around and set up lights and reflectors. It was a cloudy day in the morning, which helped it feel cold, but started to get sunny as the day went on and made it hard to create steam!

What goes into post-production and adding the logo?
We do a lot in post but try to make sure we have all the pieces we need actually shot. With “Steamy Window,” for example, we did a lot – from reshaping the car, to recreating reflections, making the writing feel hand-done but not too sloppy.

What do you hope people will feel and think when they land on a Rue La La login page?
That it looks cool and is a bit tongue-in-cheek.

You’re working on logins for the whole year – what are you most excited about going forward?
Just to have fun and change things up a bit. However, we have one involving sheep that should be a lot of fun! I would also love to hear some Members’ ideas for places to put the logo.

quite an amazing collection.... Gilles Mendel never fails me and my style taste buds. finding & writing about his collection I N S T A N T L Y takes me back to my dreamy days in NY, happily prancing through these amazing stores that made me proud that i chose to study the art & craft of fashion design. lets briefly flash back to his spring 2011 collection. although the styles varied he had one thing consistently on his mind: ballet. Gilles is the master of all draping master. the Madame Gres-inspired draped silk chiffon and jersey dresses were dusted with powdery make-up hues of blush pink and pale nude and completed with that bright coral punch on the lips and toes {apparently the brilliant wedges are Louboutins wrapped with grosgrain ankle wraps to evoke the ballet slipper}. the fur is tibetan lamb and shadow fox. which are mounted on tulle to make them semi-transparent and super light {the perfect summer sweater}

what's on the forefront for men's current styling? clothier John Meegan (and owner of Top Shelf in south minneapolis) sees the styles taking on a more tailored look with slimmer shirts and ties. the trend evolved when designers began playing with plain-front pants (rather than pleated). This yielded narrower legs, then skinnier ties. the look is trim and fit, fresh and experimental.

1. slim shirts >>custom shirts tailored 1-2.5in beyond the body (traditional cuts are 4inches), make sure there are pleats in the back for when he, ahem, grows out {pictured: Ralph Lauren Purple Label}

2. even slimmer ties >> the most extreme are just 6cm across. got a closet full of fat ties? bring them into a tailor to have them altered! which in turn is probably cheaper than buying a whole new collection {tie collection found on OhBob}

3. wool for all seasons>> a high end Italian manufacturer perfected a technology (called "super-twisting") that makes wool (formally sterotyped as a winter-wear's bff) as "airy as a pair of silk boxers". wool suits in the summertime!

4. 80/20 rule >> stop worrying so much about being matchy-matchy. make 80% of your look conservative and 20% not. get creative. {ties from 3sixteen}

it's a rarity to find bespoke hats made-to-measure. this little shop is just one of the few original hatters left in Cologne, Germany. The shop owner, Jurgen Eifler, holds the term "bespoke" to it's original meaning: "a garment made by an individual, for an individual, by an individual". simply meaning that the owner of the shop will create/alter stock sizes to your very own measurements. everything in the shop is a sample, hardly anything can be taken away immediately {unless of course you, and how dare you, want to take home something that is not fit precisely to your measurements}

nothing can cure a cold, rainy minnesota day like cheese, crackers and wine. so today, i am posting about my tasty dinner. {see, i can have cheese, crackers and wine as my dinner... gosh i love being independent}. the cheese is called murcia al vino or drunken goat. it is a spanish goat cheese with a rind washed in wine: just radiating with rich flavor. {best served at room temperature for the ease of spreading and definition of the true goat cheese flavor. so flavorful that just one little sliver 'll do. i sprinkled herb de provence for an earthy zest. the crackers: heathy little buggers.... almond rice thins: super crispy & salty, and extremely addicting. and finally, a big glass of 2009 lodi zinfandel by Plungerhead. loving the flavor blends of dried strawberry, dark raspberry, plum sauce, cedar, and pomegranate and hit of white pepper and cherry liquor {no, i couldn't really taste and distinguish those specific flavors, i cheated and looked it up. but it sure tastes like a blend of all that} it is deep, toasty, and fruity but in a brambly sort of way. the packaging is great as well! it has a very unique "twist off".... you'll have to get one yourself too see what i mean.!

we took a vacation from our vacation. drove just 2 hours from the great so cal and landed spot on in palm springs {which leads me to clearly realize i must have slept straight through geography class: i had been thinking that PS was near texas}

the whole town while being framed by tall snowy mountains is funky, colorful, and super cool

we found our mirage in the desert: the Riviera hotel downtown. we came to find that 2 days and 1 night was not nearly enough. the Riviera was F A N T A S T I C, the perfect blend of relaxation and sheer ingenuity. for the two days that we were there, we just laid back and kicked it in the pool

to our surprise on Sunday night, there was a funky little jazz band playing classic 70's disco tunes poolside. a little bit of that with champagne and truffle fries did it in

1. CAKE POPS: crumbled cake with frosting, rolled into a ball, then dipped in chocolate. for Easter, they MUST be pastel in color
2. MARSHMALLOWS: soft and luxurious. you can purchase them at bonbonbar. you can even buy a slab to cut out Easter shaped treats

i came across this stylist's portfolio and loved how she uses bright pops of rich color to accent a real home. there is usually one unusual/abstract item and the rest are your average-joe items you can snag from a garage sale. i also like her balanced mindset in how she views her profession and reality. emily's motto is "creativity before consumption" --she extends this philosophy to her professional work. finding ways to use paint or reupholster or recreate before hitting up the stores. however, when it's time to shop, she prefers flea markets and thrift stores. she quotes: "i learned to be both creative and resourceful. i found ways to make a space my own without spending a fortune and i started to live by the idea of creativity before consumption. it's a rule i try to follow in both my personal and professional lives and it gives me a great deal of satisfaction."

it's upon us: the 70's, that is. the bygone age appears in most collections for this spring. for me personally, i found karl lagerfeld's designs for Fendi the most appealing. those accessories, oh those accessories. titches of fur, stacked bangles, and structured satchels. i am absolutely in love it's palate of jade, salmon, powder blue and red: it's exhilarating, calming and refreshing all bottled into one! who knew?

just booked a flight to Orange County with the lovely Jamie Hanson! it is our get-away. our saving grace from this excruciating dismal winter. a chance to not bolt from home-to-car-to-work-car-to-home, but to actually step outside and breathe in the warm sunshine {and i say: in a tee shirt and shorts, not bundled with my warmest sweaters and winter coats}. wooo hoo!! stay tuned for our destination points!

on my days off, i go on a hunt. a hunt for goodies and treasures. one of my most coveted hot spots is a local gem of a consignment store {gasp, i can't believe i am spilling this!} called "fashion avenue" of wayzata. there my secret is out. if you are both a bargain hunter like me + you can't resist those louboutin's, one of a kind clothing and obscure jewelry {like at my most recent trip: i almost gave a home to this silver porcupine ring. ps it was only $16. i regret snagging it}. turns out these unique pieces fly from all over the u.s. >>> might i add the owners have very nifty hook-ups. here, enjoy a few snapshots of my most recent finds

what she just "can't live without": bracelets.

"i can't live without bracelets. i'd be ok if i never wore necklaces, earrings, rings or any other jewelry for that matter, as long as i have bracelets. when i was little girl my aunt wore a bunch of bangles and i was fascinated with the way they clinked together. i loved the noise it made and the way they made her wrists look so delicate. fast forward 15 years and i can't go a day without wearing one or more bracelets. in this case, less is not more. pile 'em on!"

a few extra tidbits: "specifically, i have one silver bracelet {gifted t me from a dear friend} that quotes 'Jeremiah 29:11-- For i know the plans i have for you, says the Lord.' it's inspirational and grounding every time i read it. i wear this bracelet just about everyday :) "

i equally have a passion for blogging as i do for cooking. cooking >>and i must clearly cast that i didn't say "baking"<< satisfies my inner-most desire to provide for, care for and surprise those who doubt my talents {wink}. i can also dictate the healthiness and deliciousness factor and finally it gives me the chance to experiment and entice my senses.

what she just "can't live without": her boots from cody, wyoming. these boots deserve a story: this past august, Alena, Maren, Jessie and I all took a girls trip to Yellowstone {otherwise known as Yellerrrstone}. 4 girls, one ford explorer, 13 cities, 1 unforgettable kareoke gig, and an infinite amount of buffal-inos and sturgis biker-babes later we are able to recollect back to one fantastic girls trip.... when's the next one?!

a few extra tidbits: country music, camping and thunderstorms make her happy. she is outstanding at baking cupcakes {i am a true witness: yes, yes she is!!}. and, she reserves the right to wear cowboy boots to work {lucky!}

Gisele graces the first issue of the birth of Emmanuell Alt's new editor in chief status for French Vogue...

Quite different from the persona of the preceding and self-proclaimed "queen of prono-chic" Carine Roitfeld (pictured above). Roitfeld is inexplicably svelte, tough, and dangerously ardent with cigarette-dangling, flat-chested fashion… so 7 years ago. Although, I do love her underlining innate coolness, and what drive she put into each and every issue. Carine quotes "You give everything you have, your charm, your money, your relationships, to make something fantastic. You have to be very generous." An idea that stikes close to home with me during this season of lent. She likened the same idea to the feast from Le Festin de Babette. That was how they cooked up each magazine.

France will ever be refreshed. Emmanuell's (pictured above) new formula for French style has a single focus. She rarely strays from a uniform of skinny pants, tees, black heels and either a leather jacket, slim-fitted coat or blazer. I am liking the simplicity of it.

its an addiction turned sacrifice. He gave His life, I give up my grande soy misto. yes, yes... incomparable..... but, you know it's a worthy sacrifice when >> in the brief 2 second moment after verbalizing the commitment<< you get a flash of sweat wondering if you truly have enough will power and strength to survive 40 days with out. today, i go all out. i am currently running on 2 venti steamed soy cold presses (turned hot) with a pinch of cinnamon. this is a productive day because of it and i am loving it... minus the jittery hands. all i ask: "what are you giving up?"
