The Hen House

Since moving into my sisters new cottage in Orono, Minnesota, we have been scrounging up creative names to call the soon-to-be new members of our home. Our "pecking order" has a whole new twist. We came up with: Gabriella, Georgiana, Maren, Plum Sykes and _____... all egg-laying females, of course. Rhode Island Red is the true American breed Alena chose for their reliable ability to produce tasty carmel-colored eggs and classic mohagany red feathers which will set nice against the green landscape. They are good at foraging and free ranging, and typically docile, quiet, and friendly. Although they are widely known as good layers through cold periods, which is a needed characteristic in our harsh winters. As soon as we get to say "here chick, chick, chick" ---bingo---we're farmers.
